The No. 1-ranked Maryland field hockey team will head south this weekend to take on the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday at 1 p.m. This is the first time these undefeated teams have met this year.
Maryland is 16-0 on the year and 4-0 in the ACC, while the Tarheels are 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference as well. These teams are currently ranked first and second in the ACC standings.
The Tar Heels own the all-time series between the two teams, 19-31, but the Terps took the most recent meeting. On Oct. 25, 2008, No. 1-ranked Maryland beat No. 5 North Carolina, 7-0 at home in College Park.
PLAYING THE BEST
This weekend's game will be the eleventh total and seventh straight against a ranked opponent for the Terrapins this season. Three of those ranked foes were ranked in the top five of the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
RECORD-BREAKER
Senior Nicole Muracco became the all-time career goals leader at Maryland Friday night with her two goals in the Terps' win over No. 20 Old Dominion. Her first, goal 19 on the year and 73 in her career, tied Carla Tagliente's record set in 2000. Her second, goal 74, broke Tagliente's record.
SUPER SCORERS
Maryland is the only ACC team to have four players in double-digits in goal-scoring. Senior Nicole Muracco has 22, junior Katie O'Donnell has 18, senior Emma Thomas has 16 and freshman Megan Frazer has 10.
POWER PENALTY CORNERS
So far, the Terrapins have had the upper-hand over their opponents when it comes to penalty corners. Coming into Saturday's game, the Terps have shot 139 penalty corner opportunities and have given up just 79.
