COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland leads Clemson 17-13 at the half on the strength of QB Chris Turner and WR Torrey Smith.

Turner went 11-for-15 for 154 yards and two touchdowns in the half, while Smith had 64 receiving yards and a touchdown, as well as 10 yards rushing.

Clemson was able to get on the board first after taking over at their own 41 yardline early in the first quarter. After driving 35 yards to the Maryland 24, the defense was able to get three straight stops and force the Tigers to kick a field goal, giving Clemson a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter. Clemson's 8 play, 79-yard drive was finished off by a 17-yard TD run by wide receiver Jacoby Ford on an end around.

Maryland answered on their next drive. A 28-yard pass from Chris Turner to Torrey Smith setup a 43-yard field goal by Nick Ferrara, bringing the score to 10-3. After a Clemson field goal, Smith and Turner were again vital in setting up a Maryland score. Starting on their own 24 yardline, the Terps went on a nine-play, 76-yard drive for a touchdown that brought the score to 13-10. Smith had one rush for 10 yards, and Turner found him in the end zone for a 29-yard score with 4:32 remaining in the half.

After the Terps defense forced a punt, Maryland took over at their own 19 yardline with 2:08 to play. Turner went 5-for-5 on the ensuing drive, and had four rushes for 27 yards to setup an 11-yard TD pass to Ronnie Tyler that gave Maryland their first lead of the game.

Notes: Torrey Smith became the first player in the NCAA (FBS) this season to reach 1,000 all-purpose yards. Smith currently has 1,093 all-purpose yards on the year ...Nick Ferrara, who is handling punting duties today with the injury to starting punter Travis Baltz, has looked nothing like a backup. His first punt went 61 yards to pin Clemson at their own four yardline, and he is averaging 57.0 yards per punt on two punts so far.
