WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Junior Brittney Grove led the University of Maryland volleyball team with a season-high 13 kills Friday evening at Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup won by the host Demon Deacons in four sets, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22.
Maryland (11-14, 3-9 ACC) took the first set of the match, thanks to a late run. Wake Forest (8-15, 6-6 ACC) led 15-14 midway through the session after erasing a four-point Maryland lead to force a timeout.
The Terps made the necessary adjustments during the timeout and dominated afterward. Maryland out-scored the Demon Deacons 11-5 to close the match, receiving back-to-back kills from Grove to clinch the opening stanza. Maryland out-hit Wake Forest .371-.241 in the frame.
The teams played to a 10-10 tie to begin the second set before Wake Forest pulled away a little. The Demon Deacons grabbed a 16-11 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Maryland rallied to get within two at 17-15, but never closer.
Like the second set, the pivotal third frame was tight early before the Demon Deacons pulled away midway through. Tied at 12, Wake Forest embarked on a 6-1 run to take an 18-13 lead and never looked back. The Terps got no closer than three.
Staying true to the previous three sets, Maryland and Wake Forest played another nip-and-tuck stanza in set No. 4. Both sides exchanged small scoring runs against each other, resulting in a 19-17 lead for the Demon Deacons late.
However, Maryland mounted a rally, scoring four straight points out of a timeout to take a 21-19 lead of its own. But the momentum couldn't carry Maryland through to a fifth set, as the Demon Deacons scored five consecutive points to answer the Terps' run and earn set point at 24-21. A Hayley Hanson kill staved off defeat for one point, but Kristen White sealed it for the Deacs with a kill on the ensuing play.
Grove's 13 kills were one short of her career high and she added 10 digs for a double-double. Kara Bates and Lisa Scott pitched in 10 kills apiece for Maryland and Katie Usher added six kills and five blocks. Freshman Remy McBain added a season-best 28 assists.
Andrea Beck led all players with 15 kills, hitting .478 on the night.
Maryland concludes its road trip at 7 p.m. Saturday at Duke.
