  • Hartsfield Nominated for AT&T ESPN All-America Player of the Week Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland freshmen Nick Ferrara and Demetrius Hartsfield were honored Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference for their play in Saturday's win over Clemson.

Ferrara was voted as the league's co-specialist of the week, while Hartsfield was tabbed the week's top freshman. Ferrara shared the award with Virginia place-kicker Robert Randolph.

Ferrara was responsible for all aspects of the kicking game for Maryland on Saturday, handling kickoffs, place-kicking, and punting duties. His first punt of the game was a 61-yarder that pinned Clemson at its own 4-yard line, and the Tigers went three-and-out on the ensuing drive. The true freshman punted a total of eight times, averaging 43.2 yards per attempt, allowing the dangerous Clemson returners just two returns for a total of 13 yards. Three of Ferrara's punts were inside the 20.

Hartsfield was a catalyst on defense all day, but provided maybe the most important play in Maryland's 24-21 victory. With the Tigers inside Maryland's 30-yard line and under 1:00 to play, the redshirt freshman sacked QB Kyle Parker, forcing a fumble that Hartsfield recovered to preserve the victory. Hartsfield tallied a career-high 10 tackles on the day, including eight solo stops and 2.5 tackles-for-loss.

Hartsfield was also one of four players nominated for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week award.

Hartsfield, University of Texas at El Paso running back Donald Buckram, University of Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt and University of Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate were selected by a panel of analysts from ESPN as this week's top candidates.
