COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team is back on the road for a second straight weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference play with matches at Georgia Tech and Clemson Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Terrapins enter weekend play with a 10-8 record and 2-3 mark in the ACC. The Terps split a pair of matches on Tobacco Road last week, losing in four at North Carolina before rebounding with a 3-2 victory at NC State.
Sophomore outside hitter Maddi Lee had a pair of good performances last weekend, including a 22-kill effort in the win at NC State. Lee now leads the Terps with 191 kills on the season. Senior middle blocker Katie Usher is hitting .353 for the year, the seventh-best mark in the ACC. Freshman libero Sam Rosario leads the ACC with 36 service aces, 11 more than anyone else in the league, while also ranking in the top five in digs.
Thanks in large part to Rosario's 36 aces, Maryland leads the conference with 109 aces as a team.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 10-5 and 4-1 in the ACC. Setter Mary Ashley Tippins is the catalyst for the Jackets' offensive attack, averaging a conference-best 10.93 assists per set. Georgia Tech has won three of the last four meetings in the all-time series, but Maryland owns the series lead, 25-23. The Terps and Jackets have played numerous competitive matches in recent years, as five of the last eight meetings have been decided in five sets.
Coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, the Clemson Tigers are off to an 11-4 start in 2009 with a 2-3 record in the ACC. Several Tigers rank among the top three in the ACC in numerous categories. Lia Proctor is second in kills while Sandra Adeleye and Alexa Rand are Nos. 2 and 3 in hitting percentage. Rand leads the conference in blocking and Didem Ege is currently second in digs. Overall, the Tigers are the top blocking team in the ACC.
Clemson has won its last six meetings against Maryland and now holds a 30-27 edge in the all-time series.
