Freshman Kara Bates posted nine kills and hit .360 in an Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball match Friday evening at Georgia Tech, but the University of Maryland lost to the Yellow Jackets in three sets, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.
Georgia Tech (11-5, 5-1 ACC) took command midway through the first set en route to a 10-point victory and hit .615 as a team in the opening stanza.
The Terps (10-9, 2-4 ACC) hit solidly in the second set at .357, but the Yellow Jackets were a little better, hitting .395 in the frame.
Maryland out-played Tech for a large portion of the third and final set and nearly sent the match to a fourth set, leading 22-19 late. Unfortunately for the Terps, they couldn't advance further, as the Yellow Jackets scored the final six points of the set to seal the match.
Middle blockers Katie Usher and Lisa Scott played well in defeat for the Terps. Usher registered eight kills on .471 hitting and Scott had seven kills and hit .429.
The Terps, the ACC leader in service aces, added five aces in the match, including two apiece from Usher and Bethany Springer.
The Yellow Jackets hit .398 in the match. Bailey Hunter led the way for Georgia Tech with a match-high 15 kills.
Maryland concludes a two-week conference road trip at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Clemson.
