GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland placed two players on the 2009 All-ACC football team which was announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference Sports Media Association (ACSMA).
LB Alex Wujciak was voted to the first team after earning second-team honors last season, while Torrey Smith was a second-team choice at wide receiver and as a specialist.
Wujciak, a junior, is currently second in the ACC and eighth nationally in tackles (10.9 per game). He racked up 131 tackles in 2009 to become the first Maryland defender to post more than 125 stops (133 in 2008) in back-to-back years since E.J. Henderson (150 in 2001; 175 in 2002).
After missing the 2007 season with a knee injury, Wujciak has been durable, starting the last 25 games at middle linebacker. He also posted double-digit tackles in 17 of his last 22 games and set the Maryland single-season interception return yards record (152) this year.
Wujciak's selection gives the Terps a first-team all-league choice at linebacker for the sixth time in the past nine seasons.
Smith, meanwhile, did it all for the Terrapins this season.
The sophomore posted team highs in receptions (61), receiving yards (824) and touchdowns (5). He also broke his own ACC single-season kickoff return yards mark (1,309) and smashed the Maryland single-season all-purpose yards record (2,192).
In addition, Smith surpassed Thomas Jones' (Virginia, 2,054 in 1999) ACC single-season all-purpose yards record, though C.J. Spiller of Clemson (2,207) eclipsed both this season and he has two games left to play.
Smith is already fifth in school history in career all-purpose yards (3,617).
