Terps Fifth in Directors' Cup Standings

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Outstanding finishes by its fall sports programs have the University of Maryland currently in fifth place nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, it was announced today by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
Maryland placed second in field hockey, reached the quarterfinals in men's soccer and the round of 16 in women's soccer during NCAA Championship play this fall. Those finishes garnered 90, 73 and 64 points, respectively, to give the Terrapins 227 points in the competition.
Virginia, which won the NCAA men's soccer title recently, was first with 337 points, with North Carolina in second with 283. The Tar Heels won NCAA titles in field hockey and women's soccer. Stanford was third at 281, with Princeton in fourth at 230.5.
UCLA, Wake Forest, Portland, Villanova and Florida State rounded out the top 10.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports - seven women's and seven men's sports. The final Division I fall standings will be released on Dec. 23.
