Welcome Back

Feb. 10, 2009

A belated welcome back to school...At this point classes are getting into the material, but we want to take a chance to reflect back on the Fall Semester. We had a successful fall in Athletics with Women's Field Hockey and Men's Soccer once again displaying their dominant form on the field in capturing National Championships, while the Football team finished their season with a bowl win. I

n the classroom, the Terps exemplified the balance signified by their student-athlete title. Over 130 student-athletes demonstrated success in the classroom by getting their names on the Dean's List with a minimum 3.5 GPA. And a special congratulations to the 35 student-athletes that earned a perfect 4.0 on the semester.

In addition to these accomplishments the student-athletes contributed nearly 2,000 hours of service to the surrounding community, participated in career development activities and continued to develop in accordance with the ideals of the ASCDU.

This semester we plan to continue in these successes. Women's and Men's Basketball are off to excellent starts to the season, swimming and diving is wrapping up their season, and spring sports beginning to hit full tilt.

As the rigor of classes begins, we want you to remember that you can still request a tutor on the ASCDU homepage. Be sure to check the events section for upcoming events sponsored by the ASCDU. We will be holding a Career Fair on March 10, and will hold additional workshops that focusing on various personal strategies for success: time management (February 16), sports psychology (February 24), leadership training (April 13), and stress management (April 27). In addition, we are looking into welcoming guest presentations from student affairs offices on campus.

The TERP Reading program will continue throughout the semester, Read Across America Day is coming up on March 2, and a local middle school will take part in National Student-Athlete Day. There will be other community service opportunities throughout the semester, and the student-athletes will get a chance to show their endurance at the annual Relay for Life.

These activities offer an opportunity for various developmental experiences this semester. We wish everyone the best in the coming months: on the playing surface, in the classroom, and in the community.
