Every year, the Terrapin women's water polo team must come back to the university before the spring semester has begun for two grueling weeks of preseason practices. Each year the team works hard during two-a-days for those two weeks prior to the new semester. But this year was especially memorable in that it brought girls on the team, who are from all over the country, to witness history in Washington D.C.
The coaching staff prides itself on being able to say to recruits that the University of Maryland at College Park is only eight miles away from the nation's capital. And Meghan and Carl utilized that recruiting tool when they allowed us the afternoon off to witness Barack Obama being sworn in as the first African American President of the United States.
Some girls joined the huge crowds at the Metro station to make their way into D.C., others drove, and some even biked from College Park into Washington D.C. No matter the transit, each girl was able to make it into Washington D.C. on the historic day in order to be a part of an amazing atmosphere and a significant moment in our nation's history.
Being on the National Mall next to the Washington Monument as President Obama was inaugurated was an incredible moment. For some, just being amongst the crowded streets of the city was an amazing experience in such an atmosphere of excitement. I know that each of us is grateful that we were able to have such an opportunity, even if it did mean missing one day of preseason practice.
