COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three members of the University of Maryland's women's soccer team were honored by Soccer Buzz in its annual postseason awards. Goalkeeper Mary Casey was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic third team, while defender Sade Ayinde and forward Lydia Hastings were named to the All-Freshman team.
After starting the first four matches of the season as a center back, Casey, a native of Centreville, Va., took over the starting keeper spot for the Terps in the fifth game of the 2008 season and immediately made an impact. She finished the season ranked sixth in the ACC with a 0.90 goals against average. Casey also finished fourth in save percentage (.800) and sixth in saves per game (3.38).
Earlier this season Casey was named to the All-ACC first team and was a second team All-Mid-Atlantic selection by the NSCAA. She was also honored for her work in the classroom as a second team NSCAA Scholar All-American and a first team All-East Scholar. Casey has already been selected as the Terps' team captain for the 2009 season.
Ayinde played in all 18 matches for the Terps and made 17 starts at center back, helping Maryland secure five shutouts in 2008. She also played some forward and was one of the team's primary free kick specialists. In that roll, she contributed to the offense with four assists and put seven of 12 shots on goal.
Hastings provided instant offense for the Terps, leading the team in scoring with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Her knack for scoring in key situations led to three of her goals being game-winners. Twice he had two goals in a game for Maryland in 2008.
