SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team won its first match of the season Sunday, defeating Redlands 14-4 after losing to No. 20 UC Santa Barbara 14-9 on the second day of the Triton Invitational.
The Terrapins (1-3) came out flat in the morning game, but responded with a strong defensive performance in the afternoon to return home with a win.
Junior Shannon Simerly swiped three steals and scored two goals as Maryland took a commanding 8-0 halftime lead. The Terps combined for twelve steals, including three from freshman Callan Rowe and two from goalkeepers Ashleigh Jobson and Shelby Reyes.
"We really focused on what we wanted to do on defense and that created opportunities on the counterattack," said Coach Carl Salyer.
Jobson played a flawless first half, blocking all seven shots fired on goal. Freshmen Elina Goldenberg and Christine Goetsch each found the back of the net twice, as eleven Terps scored goals in the victory. Senior Elizabeth Hopkins led Maryland with a hat trick in the first game.
The Terrapins will play host to division rivals Bucknell and Princeton on February 15th at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
