Maryland Water Polo Loses a Heartbreaker to No. 20 Santa Clara

March 15, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Maryland water polo team lost a heartbreaker Sunday to 20th-ranked Santa Clara, the third game of the Terps' West Coast spring break trip.

The Broncos (11-10) defeated the Terps 10-9 in overtime after tying the game at 9-all in regulation with 13 seconds on the clock.

Maryland (8-9) went ahead 9-8 with 1:26 left in the game, but the Broncos tallied the tying goal a minute later and won it in the extra session on a penalty shot.

"We couldn't get a stop at the end of regulation," Maryland coach Carl Salyer said. "We left someone wide open and they scored the tying goal."

Carly Hoshko and Blaise Stanicic led the Maryland offense with three goals apiece. Ashleigh Jobson went the distance in goal, stopping 10 Santa Clara shots.

The Terps fought their way back into the game after letting in the first four goals of the game.

"We got off to a slow start," Salyer said. "We got outplayed early. We clawed our way back, but couldn't get any momentum going."

The Terps have now lost two of their three games on the road trip in overtime. They lost to UC Davis 10-9 in an extra period Saturday and were also edged 7-6 later in the day by No. 7 California.

Maryland looks to end the road trip on a positive note Tuesday when it plays Cal State Monterey Bay.
