COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland coaching staff should start to get a feel for the progress of the football team in the coming days as the Terrapins will scrimmage three times over the final seven spring practices.
The first of those scrimmages is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. The scrimmage was originally set for 10 a.m., but Saturday's weather forecast calls for rain in the morning.
The scrimmage is open to the public. Fans attending the scrimmage should enter through Gate K which is located on Field House Drive and sit on the north side of the stadium (opposite the press box) due to construction on the suites.
Head coach Ralph Friedgen considers this a key evaluation time.
"Pretty much everything is in right now," Friedgen said after Thursday's practice. "We're going to see what they do in game situations, then go back and correct the mistakes. Hopefully we'll have a good scrimmage this week and next."
The scrimmage will feature offensive possessions from various spots on the field. The first and second teams will get about 50 plays apiece.
The team spent about an hour of Saturday's practice in a scrimmage-type setting. The defense got the better of the offense in the 60-play mock scrimmage.
The offense, which started its possessions at the 35-yard line, managed just one touchdown in eight drives, while the defense posted four sacks and had an interception.
The Terps will hold their second scrimmage on Saturday, April 18 (10 a.m.) and the Red-White Spring Game on Saturday, April 25 (3:30 p.m.)
Terp Notes:
Practice Notes: Cornerbacks Michael Carter (hamstring) and Cameron Chism (hamstring) have been banged up the last week so that has given an opportunity to other players. Friedgen singled out Trenton Hughes after Thursday's practice. Friedgen said Hughes has improved and Kenny Tate has even gotten a look at cornerback. "He's a long guy," Friedgen said. "That helps on press coverage." ... FB Haroon Brown (ankle), who had the lone touchdown in the mock scrimmage, is likely to miss Saturday's scrimmage, which could limit what the Terps do offensively. With Cory Jackson (knee) rehabbing from off-season surgery, Taylor Watson is the lone healthy fullback... Friedgen said there is also some competition at punter. Junior Travis Baltz is coming off an All-ACC season, but Ted Townsley has been a solid backup the last two seasons and has been impressive through the first two weeks of spring ball ... the battle for the place-kicking role is between Nick Wallace, Mike Barbour and David May, though no one has separated himself from the group ... Friedgen also singled out the play of sophomore WR Tony Logan who has demonstrated good pass-catching skills. Logan is making a push for the starting Z receiver position. Junior Emani Lee-Odai entered the spring No. 1 on the depth chart, followed by Quintin McCree and Logan.
