CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team played hard in a close loss to No. 12 Michigan, 9-8, in the CWPA Eastern Championship semifinal on Saturday.
The Terps (15-13, 8-1) fought back from an 8-5 fourth period deficit to tie the game with 2:27 remaining before 2009 Western Division Player of the Year Julie Hyrne scored the game-winning goal with 1:58 left.
Ashleigh Jobson kept the Terrapins in the game until the bitter end by blocking half the shots that were thrown her way.
"Ashleigh had four blocks that were unbelievable, they should have been goals," said head coach Carl Salyer. "We stayed close all game, but once we tied it up, we couldn't seem to finish."
Trailing 8-6 with 3:30 remaining, senior Blaise Stanicic scored consecutive goals within a minute to tie the game. She finished with three goals to lead all scorers.
Shannon Simerly and Allison Beck each had two crucial goals to stay within striking distance of the Wolverines. Christine Goetsch also tallied a goal to round out the scoring for Maryland.
The Terps will play No. 19 Brown tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the third place game. A win would give Maryland their highest finish at the Eastern Championship in school history.
