COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball program has tabbed former University of Dayton volleyball player Kortney Norris as its new assistant coach, Maryland head coach Tim Horsmon announced Monday.
Norris joins the Terrapins' program on the heels of an outstanding four-year career at Dayton, three of which came under the tutelage of Horsmon and current Maryland associate head coach Tami Ores. Norris was a three-year captain for Horsmon and a key member of two Atlantic 10 Conference championship teams and two NCAA Tournament teams. She recorded 621 kills, 410 digs and 103 blocks at outside hitter in three seasons for the Flyers, before missing her final season due to injury.
"I am really excited about this opportunity. I will be coaching a sport I love at such a great university that excels both athletically and academically," Norris said. "I would like to thank coach Horsmon and coach Ores for giving me the chance to be part of a program that will be at the top of the ACC and one of the best in the country. I am energized about the challenge of recruiting top-level players and working with our team's outside hitters. I look forward to relating my experiences as a player to our passionate student-athletes."
Norris served as a student assistant coach her fourth year a Dayton, helping the Flyers to a 21-13 record and a third NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons.
At Maryland, Norris replaces Jason Oliver, now head coach at High Point University, as the team's primary trainer of outside hitters. Norris' duties will also include recruiting, coordinating the team's travel, working summer camps and acting as the staff's liaison with the academic support office.
"I am really excited to have Kortney join our staff," Horsmon said. "It's funny how things turn out. I've actually been talking to Kortney for years about coaching as a profession. When this position first opened, Kortney was the first person I thought of and I'm glad the timing of this transition worked. Kortney has all the tools to be great in this profession and is a tireless worker. Kortney is family and her loyalty in unmatched.
"Kortney was the glue to our teams at Dayton and is the strongest team captain I've ever been around. Kortney's competitive nature and toughness made her a joy to coach and set a great example for the rest of the team. We are continuing to work toward being one of the elite programs in the ACC and in the country and Kortney understands our mission and has been a part of it as a player."
Originally from Indianapolis, Norris was a standout in volleyball and track at Bishop Chatard High School. Norris was a three-time all-state volleyball selection in Indiana, earning first-team honors as a senior. Norris was a three-time all-city selection and was twice named an Indiana all-star. In track, Norris was also a three-time all-state selection and two-time all-city choice.
