Student-Athletes Participate in Service Events on Campus

May 6, 2009

Over the course of three days the University of Maryland student-athletes participated in the two largest community service events of the year: the annual National Student-Athlete Day celebration and Relay for Life.

National Student-Athlete Day is nationally observed on April 6, to recognize the "student" in student-athlete. This year, Maryland athletics chose to celebrate on May 1 to accommodate the honor roll students from Argyle Middle School in Sliver Spring. There were 155 students and 12 chaperones from Argyle that participated in the event that included a campus tour, a pizza lunch with a student-athlete panel, and an hour of activities in the Comcast Center Pavilion. A total of 70 student-athletes volunteered to share their experiences as University of Maryland student-athletes and guide the activities with the middle school kids.

Student-athletes dedicated time and effort to fundraising and activities for the Relay for Life event. The overnight event lasted from 6 PM to 6 AM at Ludwig field, May 2-3 and saw the athletic teams share the responsibility of walking for the American Cancer Society. A total of more than 200 student-athletes showed up to Ludwig to support the endeavors of the ACS, and the student-athletes raised a total of $2,765. Donations are still being accepted. Visit relayumd.org and donate to your favorite team.
