COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team has announced the addition of former New Mexico State outside hitter Alex Steinmetz. Steinmetz played two years for the Aggies before deciding to join the Terrapins, increasing the number of new signees for 2009 to six.
A Las Cruces, N.M., native, Steinmetz was the Gatorade and Associated Press player of the year in New Mexico in 2006, leading Las Cruces High School to the state championship game.
Steinmetz played in 32 matches in two years at New Mexico State, recording 52 kills and 20 blocks.
"Alex immediately gives us an attacker on the outside that can score points and has been around great volleyball," Maryland head coach Tim Horsmon said. "I think Alex's size, athleticism and understanding of the game will immediately make us better and make our program more competitive.
"Alex played for a very strong program at New Mexico State and I believe this move gives Alex a chance to be a difference-maker here. We are thrilled to have Alex joining our program and I think she will be a great fit here."
