COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Departing senior Maggie Schmelzle and junior standout Katie Usher were named co-most valuable players recently at the University of Maryland Volleyball Banquet and Awards Ceremonies.
Schmelzle, who played both outside hitter and libero, was one of the most productive players in program history and finished her career second all-time in digs and in the top 10 in service aces. Schmelzle finished her career with 1,597 digs, one of only three players with more than 1,500 in Maryland history.
Usher led the Terps in kills (282), attack percentage (.270) and blocks (104) last season and is well on her way to becoming one of the most accomplished middle blockers in Maryland history. Usher already ranks fifth in school history in total blocks and fourth in block assists.
Sophomore Brittney Grove was tabbed as the most improved player. After playing middle as a freshman, Grove moved to right side last year and was one of the most versatile players on the team, giving the Terps solid production at attacking, blocking, digging and serving. Grove tied for the team lead in service aces and notched 242 digs, 142 kills and 32 blocks.
The "Tough as Nails" award went to Schmelzle, giving her two awards on the night. Schmelzle played in all 32 of the team's matches with a painful shoulder injury that required surgery in the off-season.
