INDIANAPOLIS - University of Maryland head track and field coach Andrew Valmon has been named to the coaching staff for the United States team that will participate at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Valmon, himself a two-time Olympic gold medalist, will be responsible for the sprinters and hurdlers on Team USA. He will join the staff of Harvey Glance, a former 16-time All-America sprinter and the current head coach at the University of Alabama.
Valmon, who just finished his sixth season as the Terrapins' head coach, earned gold medals as a member of the U.S. 4x400 relay teams at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. He was on 13 U.S. National Teams, earning gold medals at the 1990 Goodwill Games, the 1993 World Championships and the 1994 Goodwill Games. He owns a personal-best of 44.28 in the 400-meter dash and was ranked as high as fourth in the nation and seventh in the world during his career.
At Maryland, he has guided Terrapin student-athletes to eight All-America honors in his six seasons and has been responsible for reconnecting the proud traditions of Maryland track and field to its alumni base.
Joining the Team USA men's staff will be distance specialist Stanley Redwine from the University of Kansas, jumps coach Steve Fritz who is an assistant at Kansas State University, and current Oregon assistant Lance Deal, who is one of the top American performers ever in the hammer throw.
Chandra Cheesborough, currently the head coach at Tennessee State, will be head coach of the women's team.
The World Championships will be held August 15-23 in Berlin. At the most recent World Outdoor Championships in 2007 in Osaka, Japan, Team USA tied the all-time World Championships record for gold medals with 14.
