PRUSSIA, Pa. - Maryland junior linebacker Alex Wujciak was named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which honors the top defensive player in the country.
Wujciak was one of 55 players, including seven from the Atlantic Coast Conference, on the list, which was announced Thursday by the Maxwell Football Club.
Wujciak was also an All-ACC selection last season, earning second-team honors after posting 133 tackles, including double-digit stops in eight games. He ranked 13th nationally in tackles (10.2 per game) and was also a consensus preseason all-league selection this summer.
Wujciak is the third Maryland player up for a national post-season award. Da'Rel Scott is a candidate for the Doak Walker Award (top running back) and Travis Baltz is on the short list for the Ray Guy Award (top punter).
Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced on Nov. 4 and three finalists named on Nov. 23. The winner of the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show which will be held on Dec. 10. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club.
The award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great.
Former Terp E.J. Henderson won the 2002 Bednarik Award.
