BOSTON - The University of Maryland field hockey team wrapped up its weekend in Boston with a scrimmage versus Boston College on Monday morning on the heels of the United States Junior World Cup Team, featuring three members of the national champion Terrapins, claiming eighth place at the 16-team event.
Maryland's Katie O'Donnell, Brianna Davies and Alexis Pappas competed for Team USA in the 2009 BDO Junior World Cup. The U.S. fell to China, 8-2, on Saturday at Harvard University's Jordan Field to finish the event in eighth place.
O'Donnell, a two-time All-American who will be a junior in the Terps' attempt to claim back-to-back national titles in 2009, also played for the U.S. in the 2005 Junior World Cup where the Americans placed an all-time best seventh.
While the Terp trio competed for the U.S. at the Junior World Cup, the rest of the Maryland program participated in a pair of exhibition matches. Maryland dispatched of Northeastern on Saturday, 1-0, in overtime on a Nicole Muracco goal less than a minute into the extra session.
The preseason exhibitions came to a close on Monday when the Terps tangled with Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College. The teams did not complete a full match, instead playing in three 20-minute segments along with situational play. The final goal tally found the Terps down 2-1 at the end of the day.
Maryland will return to College Park to continue training for the 2009 season and will have O'Donnell, Davies and Pappas back on the practice field now that their Junior World Cup obligations are complete. The regular-season opener comes Aug. 28 in Evanston, Ill., versus Ohio at the Wildcat Classic, hosted by Northwestern.
