COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
In order to prepare the Maryland Terrapins for the regular season, head coach Ralph Friedgen uses every opportunity to put his team in game-like situations during the preseason.
The Terps used the second half of Thursday's workout to hold a mock scrimmage in the stadium, which did not feature any tackling, but had most of the other elements of a game.
Saturday's 110-play scrimmage saw all four teams get work, but Thursday's version focused on the first- and second-teamers.
"I think we got out of that what I wanted to," Friedgen said. "We got a lot of situations covered. We did a pretty good job as far as that. As far as the individual play, Jamarr (Robinson) did some good things and made some plays. There are some mental things and game management things he has to get better at, but he made some big plays. We didn't run the ball very well. We have to get better at that."
Taking the bulk of the snaps for both the first and second team, Robinson accounted for three of the offense's four touchdowns and led the team to a field goal on the final drive of the 75-play mock scrimmage.
Robinson completed 16 of 28 passes for 250 yards with touchdowns to LaQuan Williams, Kevin Dorsey and Emani Lee-Odai, three members of the Terps' talented receiving corps.
Robinson led the second-team offense on a 95-yard touchdown drive on the second possession, connecting with Williams on a 29-yard strike in the right corner of the end zone. Williams' 48-yard reception from Robinson set up the score.
"I think LaQuan is having a good camp," Friedgen said. "He's a playmaker. Ronnie Tyler's playing good as well. He and LaQuan have a real battle going. LaQuan could play any of the positions; we might even bump him out to the Z. He's got good hands and a lot of shake."
Robinson, who had five throws for more than 20 yards, also marched the offense 52 yards on another drive, capped off with a 29-yard strike to Dorsey on third-and-10.
Dorsey had a team-high five receptions for 61 yards, while Williams (84 yards), Smith (46 yards) and Adrian Cannon (31 yards) had three catches apiece.
The defense was not quite as dominating as it was in Saturday's scrimmage when the Terps racked up 12 sacks, but they managed to take down the four quarterbacks a total of seven times.
Anthony Wiseman had a team-high six tackles (all solo) and Jamari McCollough had two of the sacks. McCollough also picked off a Chris Turner pass and recovered a fumble.
Turner went 9 of 13 for 80 yards in six possessions. Freshmen C.J. Brown and Danny O'Brien only took a handful of snaps.
With no tackling it was hard to get a read on the running game.
Morgan Green rushed five times for eight yards and Robinson had seven attempts for eight yards.
"Defensively I think we continue to get better," Friedgen said. "Right now I think we're pretty good on defense. So we'll just see how we continue to go. I know right now we're at the dead-legged stage, but tomorrow we'll lighten up and hopefully have a good scrimmage Saturday."
The team will hit the field for two practices Friday. The first workout is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. and the second one at 5:25 p.m. Both will be held at the on-campus practice facility.
Preseason practices are closed to the general public, but open to members of the Maryland Gridiron Network (MGN) and Terrapin Club.
Terps Notes:
Scrimmage Tidbits: The two interceptions in the mock scrimmage came on back-to-back plays. On the fourth possession, Antwine Perez picked off Jamarr Robinson and returned the ball 6 yards. On first-and-10 from the offense's 40-yard line, Chris Turner had his deep pass to Adrian Cannon intercepted by Jamari McCollough, who came over from his strong safety position ... Deege Galt broke through the line to block Mike Barbour's 45-yard field goal attempt on the eighth possession ... Torrey Smith, who set the ACC single-season kickoff return yards record last season, looked to be in mid-season form. He returned one kickoff for 30 yards and another for 37 yards.
