COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With the regular season less than two weeks away, the Maryland Terrapins held their second scrimmage of the preseason Sunday afternoon in Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
While Thursday's mock scrimmage focused on the passing game, head coach Ralph Friedgen utilized Sunday's 117-play scrimmage to fine-tune the running game and give the reserves a chance to move up the depth chart.
Junior Morgan Green and redshirt freshman Gary Douglas, who are both battling for time at tailback behind Da'Rel Scott and Davin Meggett, made cases for more playing time at a position of great depth for the Terps.
Douglas rushed 17 times for a scrimmage-high 122 yards, including four runs of 15 or more yards. He didn't score a touchdown but almost single-handedly led the offense down the field for a score on one drive, accounting for 72 of the 80 yards.
"I think he showed some elusiveness, some real ball skills today," Friedgen said. "What impressed me the most is it was against our first team defense."
The Terps have a stable of backs, but Douglas may bring a different dimension to the table.
"He has probably more elusive moves than any back we have," Friedgen said. "He has very quick lateral movement."
Green is more of a between the tackles runner and demonstrated that on his 10 carries.
After gaining just five yards on his first three carries, Green racked up 51 on his last seven carries, including an impressive 20-yard touchdown run where he broke a number of tackles on his way to the end zone.
The offense looked like it was on its way to a big day after scoring on the sixth play of the scrimmage.
After Scott gained 22 yards on three carries, Chris Turner made three straight completions, including a 33-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Torrey Smith.
Turner completed 13 of 20 passes for 113 yards. Backup Jamarr Robinson didn't fare quite as well as he had in previous scrimmages, hitting on just 5 of 14 passes for 59 yards, though he did direct two scoring drives.
After the opening scoring drive, the defense buckled down and held the offense in check in each of the next five possessions.
Mike Barbour looked sharp early, capping off two drives with field goals. The redshirt freshman, who had a leg up on the No. 1 place-kicker job, hit from 30 and 36 yards out.
"Barbour started off pretty good, and then he missed his last three," Friedgen said. "He kind of looked like he had solidified the job and then he opens it up again."
Defensive back Eric Franklin opened some eyes with his play. The true freshman posted a scrimmage-best eight tackles and picked off Turner on the sixth possession.
"We're hoping he'll be the fifth safety for us," Friedgen said. "We held Jamari McCollough out because he's banged up a little bit. But he'll be back. We really wanted to find out if Eric Franklin could go. We think he'll develop into a good safety for us this year."
Trenton Hughes, one of the top two backups to starting cornerbacks Nolan Carroll and Anthony Wiseman, made a scrimmage-best six solo stops among his seven tackles.
Defensive back Austin Walker and linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield each had six stops. Hartsfield also posted a scrimmage-best two tackles for loss, including one of the defense's three sacks.
Overall, Friedgen and the coaching staff got what they wanted from the scrimmage which featured 22 possessions. The bulk of the drives had the first teams going against the second-teamers.
"It was a good, tough scrimmage," Friedgen said. "I wanted to get about three quarters in. The offense had about 64 plays, which is about three quarters. I held some people that I've been satisfied with in camp. I didn't want to risk injury."
The team is back on the field at 4:10 p.m. Monday to begin its final week of preseason camp.
Preseason practices are closed to the general public, but open to members of the Maryland Gridiron Network (MGN) and Terrapin Club.
Terp Notes:
Scrimmage Tidbits: The offense scored on all four goal-line possessions (starting at defense's 4-yard line) at the end of the scrimmage. Da'Rel Scott scored on the first and fourth possessions, while Davin Meggett and Jamarr Robinson also had scoring runs ... Travis Baltz averaged just 36.8 yards on five punts, despite connecting on two of more than 50 yards. The junior preseason All-American hit a pair off the side of his foot in an attempt to direct the punt to the right sideline. However, by gaining good height on his other four punts, he did not allow a return ... freshman RB Caleb Porzel, who has displayed quickness and elusiveness in preseason camp, had a nifty 35-yard TD run called back due to a holding call ... true freshman Nick Ferrara handled the kickoff duties. He kicked off four times, with one reaching the end zone and another being fielded at the 3-yard line ... Friedgen noted he is seeing improvement in the offensive line, which played a part in the improved running game in Sunday's scrimmage. He also said the Terps need to cut down on penalties, which have been too frequent thus far with the young offensive line.
