COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by a solid backline effort, the Maryland men's soccer team shutout Villanova, 1-0, on Thursday night in its final exhibition before the 2009 regular season commences.
The Terps, who started three freshmen including Taylor Kemp and Ethan White on defense, held Villanova to five shots in the game. Maryland keeper Zac MacMath picked up the shutout in goal.
Drew Yates secured a rebound off Wildcat keeper Chris Bresnahan after Maryland freshman John Stertzer made a nice run at goal in the 82nd minute. Yates snagged the ball with his left foot from 17-yards out and gave the Terps the 1-0 lead. Maryland outshot Villanova, 11-5, in the contest.
"It was our goal to get better defensively and we did that today," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We have some talented young players that have gotten better even since our last scrimmage.
"The game was what we wanted - highly competitive and highly combative. We are going to get everyone's best game and we just need to be prepared for that."
Maryland officially kicks off the 2009 campaign with a match against UCLA on Friday, Sept. 4 at Ludwig Field. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
