Maryland's ACC Academic Honor Roll Total Ranks Second Among ACC Public Institutions

2008-09 ACC Academic Honor Roll 
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 53rd annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, noting academic excellence by student-athletes for 2008-09, was announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford and includes 271 student-athletes from the University of Maryland - second most in the conference among the league's public institutions.
The Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes that participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.00 or better for the full academic year. This year saw a record 2,772 student-athletes honored for their hard work in the classroom.
Duke led the conference in total selections with 418. Boston College followed with 392. North Carolina was third with 276 honorees, while Maryland was fourth with 271. Virginia saw 224 student-athletes earn spots on the list, followed by Clemson (209), Virginia Tech (190), NC State (178), Georgia Tech (175), Florida State (165), Wake Forest (146) and Miami (128).
Headlining this year's Honor Roll are 18 five-time honorees, led by five apiece from Georgia Tech and Virginia. NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest each saw two players make the list, followed by one apiece from Maryland and Miami. The list of five-time ACC honor roll recipients includes Georgia Tech's Adam Cohan, David Dragoo, Taylor Hall, Darryl Richard and Nazar Trilisky; Maryland's Mary Brown; Miami's Kathleen McInvale; NC State's Amy Kelly and Ty Roach; Virginia's Ryan Hurley, Katherine Read, Kristen Simpson, Michael Timms and Karla Wilburn; Virginia Tech's Sean Glennon and Natalie Sherbak; and Wake Forest's John Compton and Kristina Hanley.
In addition, this year's ACC Academic Honor Roll includes 260 four-time honorees.
The 2008-09 Academic Honor Roll features 24 ACC Players of the Year. Those student-athletes include Boston College's Mark Herzlich (football defensive); Clemson's Meg Bendek, Brittany Cummings , Jessica Leidecker, Michelle Nance and Grace Wolff (rowing crew members); Duke's Chante Black (women's basketball defender), Amanda Blumenherst (women's golf) and Ned Crotty (men's lacrosse); Florida State's Jean-Yves Aubone (men's tennis), Charles Clark (men's track), Sarah Hamilton (softball pitcher), Susan Kuiijken (women's cross country) and Kim Williams (women's field); Maryland's Caitlyn McFadden (women's lacrosse), Katie O'Donnell (field hockey offensive) and Susie Rowe (field hockey defensive); Miami's Reuben Ross (men's diving); NC State's Kristin Davies (women's diving); Virginia's Mei Christensen (women's swimming); Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison (women's track and field); and Wake Forest's Michael Bingham (men's indoor track), Ike Opara (men's soccer defensive) and Natalie Sheary (women's golf).
The 12 ACC Freshmen of the Year named to the honor roll include Duke's Mallory Cecil (women's tennis); Florida State's Tiffany McCarty (women's soccer); Georgia Tech's Kelsi Weseman (softball), Miami's Lane Carico (volleyball), NC State's Russell Wilson (football offensive), Virginia's Morgane Gay (women's track and field), Danny Hultzen (baseball) and Tony Tchani (men's soccer); Virginia Tech's Will Mulherin (men's track), Abigail Schaffer (women's indoor track) and Luke Somen (men's tennis) and Wake Forest's Anna Nosenko (women's cross country).
