COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team returns to the court this weekend with a short trip south to Washington, D.C., to play in the Georgetown Classic at Georgetown University.
The Terrapins enter weekend play with a 4-3 record after splitting four matches in last weekend's Battle of Baltimore.
Hampton is Maryland's first opponent of the tournament, as the Terps and Pirates will face one another for the first time ever at 5 p.m. Friday. The Terps return to Georgetown Saturday morning for an 11 a.m. match with the William & Mary Tribe. After a long break, the Terps will face the Hoyas at 7 p.m. in the tournament's final match.
Maryland owns the historical edge against both the Tribe and Hoyas. The Terps are 13-6 all-time against William & Mary and 41-14 in the series with the Hoyas. Despite the proximity between the two schools, Maryland and Georgetown have not played since 2004, a three-set Maryland victory in College Park.
Through two weeks, freshman outside hitter Kara Bates is Maryland's leading offensive threat, ranking ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 86 kills for an average of 3.07 per set. Freshman libero Sam Rosario has been an immediate factor for the Terps, as well. Rosario leads the ACC with 15 service aces and ranks seventh in the conference with 102 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Lisa Scott is coming off a big weekend in which she earned all-tournament honors at the Battle of Baltimore. Scott leads the Terps with a .321 hitting percentage and 27 blocks.
Senior Katie Usher enters the weekend 12 block assists shy of tying former teammate Mary Beth Brown on the school's all-time list.
