WASHINGTON -
Sophomore outside hitter Maddi Lee led the University of Maryland volleyball team with nine kills on a career-best .471 hitting as the Terrapins made short work of the Hampton Pirates Friday evening in the first round of the Georgetown Classic, winning 3-0 in a crisp 1 hour, 13 minutes.
After a relatively-close first-set victory by a 25-22 score, the Terps (5-3) cruised in the next two frames, winning 25-17 and 25-10.
Holding a 15-9 lead in the opening set, the Terps looked to be in control. However, the Pirates (2-5) rallied back with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two and eventually knotted the score at 20. Maryland kept its focus, though, scoring the next three points on kills by Lee and Brittney Grove, followed by a tandem block from Grove and Lisa Scott. Up 24-22, freshman outside hitter Kara Bates put home the clinching kill on a set from fellow frosh Taylor Jones.
Lee recorded five of her nine kills in the opening set, hitting .500.
The Pirates scored four of the first five points in set No. 2, but it was all Terps after that. Tied at 8, Maryland went on an 8-1 run thanks to a pair of kills each from Lee and senior Katie Usher. Maryland led by six points or more the rest of the way.
With the score tied at 4 early in the third set, the Terps pulled away from the Pirates with an 8-0 run and were never threatened, winning by 15 points.
Maryland hit .474 in the final set, while holding Hampton to -.158. Bates and Usher both had four kills in the frame.
Bates and Usher both netted eight kills, while Grove pitched in with six. Scott added a match-high six blocks. Freshman libero Sam Rosario, who entered the match as the ACC's leader in service aces, added two more against the Pirates, while Grove also had a pair of aces.
Sophomore Sharon Strizak finished with 18 assists, moving into 10th place on Maryland's all-time list. Jones had 18 assists of her own.
Lina Cordoba and Brittany Wynne had seven kills each for the Pirates.
The Terps return to Georgetown tomorrow for a pair of matches. Maryland faces William & Mary at 11 a.m. and the host Hoyas at 7 p.m.
