COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1-ranked Maryland field hockey team will host the Terrapin Invitational tournament this weekend, with three teams heading to College Park to compete. No. 13 Penn State, American, and Towson will all be coming to participate in the Terps' annual tournament.
On Saturday, Maryland will take the field first against Penn State at 11 a.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. At 1 p.m., American and Towson will face off. Penn State and American will play at noon on Sunday and Towson will take on the Terps at 2 p.m. Fans should be advised that prior to noon they can park for free in lot 4i, the lot directly adjacent to the Complex. Due to the home football game, after noon all fans will be charged $15 for parking. All parking on Sunday is free.
In the latest NFHCA rankings, the Terrapins kept a stronghold on their No. 1 ranking, going 5-0 in the first few weeks of the season. Their latest win came over No. 20 Michigan last Sunday in the home opener. After a hard-fought first half, Maryland pulled away with a 4-1 win. Junior Katie O'Donnell was named ACC Player of the Week this past week for her performance in the week beginning Aug. 31. She currently leads the Terps in goals (7), assists (7), and points (21).
The Nittany Lions head south to College Park looking to even their record after a 2-3 start. Most recently, Penn State lost to No. 5 Connecticut, 2-1, Sunday. All of its three losses have been by one goal to three top ten teams.
American comes up the road to compete after just falling from the NFHCA Top 20 teams. They are 1-2 on the year and are coming off of a 5-1 loss to No. 7 Michigan State.
The Towson Tigers are 2-1 on the year and are coming off of a 2-1 overtime win over LaSalle on Wednesday. The Tigers will be looking to knock off the Terrapins for the first time.
