COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame notes following Maryland's 38-35 overtime victory over James Madison.
Fulper Gets First Career Start: True freshman Bennett Fulper made his first career against James Madison. Fulper, who started at left guard, is one of just two freshmen to start on the offensive line in the last four seasons. Bruce Campbell started one game in 2007 (vs. Clemson, 10/27). Prior to that, the last true freshman to start on the o-line was Jared Gaither in 2005 (vs. NC State, 11/26).
Going Overtime: Maryland's last overtime game was on 9/22/07 in a 31-24 loss at Wake Forest. The Terps' last OT win came 11/12/05 at North Carolina, 33-30. Maryland's last OT game at home was on 11/4/2000 in a 35-28 victory over NC State.
Spreading The Wealth: After only three players made a catch in the season-opener against California, eight players recorded at least one reception against JMU. Torrey Smith led the pack with eight receptions; Adrian Cannon had five; Quintin McCree had four, Ronnie Tyler had three, Davin Meggett finished with two, while Da'Rel Scott, LaQuan Williams and Taylor Watson had one each.
Torrid Torrey: Torrey Smith wasted little time in making an impact against the Dukes. The sophomore, who was a unanimous preseason All-ACC pick as a kick returner, took a kickoff 81 yards for a score in the first quarter to extend the Terps' lead to 14-6. In the 4th quarter, Smith ran 8 yards for a TD to tie the score at 28. All in all, Smith had eight catches for 80 yards, 2 rushes for 22 yards, and 4 kickoff returns for 127 yards for a total of 229 all-purpose yards on the evening.
Crucial Plays: The Terps made several crucial plays in the second half to earn the win. One came on fourth-and-4 with under six minutes to play in the game and Maryland down seven. Turner hit Ronnie Tyler for a gain of 20 yards. On the next play, Turner hit Adrian Cannon for a 27-yard touchdown to tie the game with 5:09 left.
Clutch Cannon: Adrian Cannon picked a good time to make his first TD reception of the season. With just 5:09 remaining in the game and Maryland trailing by seven, Turner hit Smith for a 27-yard score. The touchdown is the second of Cannon's career.
Home Openers: Maryland has now won 11 of its last dozen home openers, including eight of nine during the Ralph Friedgen era... Maryland improved to 19-2 under Friedgen in non-conference home games.
Turner Climbing Charts: Maryland senior QB Chris Turner threw for 236 yards against the Dukes and is now within 112 yards of Neil O'Donnell in fifth place on the career passing yards list at 4,877.
Scott Moving Up: Da'Rel Scott added 68 yards to his career total and is now at 1,426, moving into 20th on the career rushing yards list.
Experienced Freshman: Nick Ferrara, who is a true freshman, came through in a pressure-packed moment in OT by hitting the game-winning field goal. The Hicksville, N.Y., native faced many high-pressure kicks while battling redshirt freshman Mike Barbour throughout fall camp. Ferrara won the starting placekicking job days before the season opener.
Double-Digit Tacklers: After not having any players reach double-digit tackles against California, LB Adrian Moten totaled a career-high 13 (four solo, nine assisted) and LB Alex Wujciak had 10 (four solo, six assisted) against JMU.
