COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland leads Middle Tennessee State 14-13 at halftime on the strength of RB's Darel Scott and Davin Meggett, along with an impressive defensive effort.
Scott opened the scoring with 6:46 left in the first quarter. Thanks to the defense, the Terps got the ball in good field position at their own 44-yard line. After a rush of eight yards and a rush for no gain, Scott found a seem off right tackle and raced 48 yards to the end zone to give Maryland the 7-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee State had short fields on both of their scoring drives. Their first started on the Maryland 29 yardline after a Terps turnover. Five plays and 1:21 later, QB Dwight Dasher ran three yards to bring MTSU within 7-6. The extra point was blocked by A.J. Francis to preserve the Maryland lead for the time being.
Moments later, the Blue Raiders started at the Maryland 30 after a Da'Rel Scott fumble, and took three plays to find the end zone for the second time on the day. Dasher found Sancho McDonald for a seven yard score to put MTSU ahead 13-7.
After Maryland had a field goal attempt blocked with 2:58 remaining in the half, MTSU took over on their own 19. On the first play of the drive, Dasher ran to his left and fumbled, and it was recovered by DT Travis Ivey. Five plays later, Meggett plunged in from a yard out to give Maryland the lead back, 14-13.
Notes: The fumble recovery by Ivey was the first turnover forced by the Maryland defense this season. On MTSU's next drive, DB Cameron Chism made his first career interception on a pass from Dasher to give the Terps defense their second turnover... Maryland's defense allowed just 145 yards of total offense in the half, including just nine yards on 13 rushes.
