Sept. 2, 2009
As the first day of classes came to a close, while most students were deciding what to do their first official night on campus, the student athletes were invited to attend the Welcome Back Terps Turnout. They were greeted by their current SAAC representatives at the gate of Byrd Stadium. Freshman through senior student athletes from every sport, along with their coaches, as well as ICA staff and their families all came out to welcome one another back to campus and to spur one another on to do their very best in the upcoming year. Student athletes had the opportunity to interact and meet their athletic director, Deborah Yow as well as the president of the university, Dr. C.D. Mote both of whom offered wonderful speeches congratulating the student athletes on their level of success both in the classroom and in their prospective sports.
Guest speaker Boomer Esiason brought a great dose of reality in his speech as he shared his past experiences while a student athlete here at the university. He also shared his great love for his alma mater and reminded student athletes of the rich tradition that the University of Maryland has.
This event was a wonderful success as student athletes from every sport joined in and sang the Victory song with great enthusiasm. Captains of every team shared their team goals both academically and athletically. Even Testudo made an appearance to welcome everyone back. Classes have officially begun, goals have been set, and teams have been encouraged. Now the work begins. Good luck to you all.
