Maryland Leads Rutgers 13-10 At Halftime

Sept. 26, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland leads Rutgers 13-10 at halftime, led by a stout defensive performance and several long plays.

Torrey Smith made history by returning the opening kickoff 24 yards, bringing his career total to 1,536 yards. That moved him past Keeta Covington for first all-time in Maryland career kickoff return yards.

On the first offensive play of the game for Maryland, Antonio Lowery stepped in front of a Chris Turner pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Scarlet Knights a 7-0 lead.

Maryland's second drive of the game produced three points. After a five-play drive highlighted by Chris Turner's 45-yard pass to Torrey Smith, Nick Ferrara booted a 38-yard FG to bring the Terps within 7-3.

After a Rutgers field goal, the Terps pulled even early in the second quarter. Turner faked to his left, then came back to his right and threw to LaQuan Williams, who made the catch and scampered 24-yards down the sideline for the score. The touchdown was the first of Williams' career and was part of a three-play, 68-yard drive.

Ferrara kicked a 34-yard FG with 0:11 to play in the half to give them the 13-10 lead.

The Maryland defense held Rutgers to just 95 yards of offense in the first half, including just 24 passing yards. The Terps had four plays of at least 21 yards, the longest being the 45-yard pass to Smith.
