COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland volleyball team will face a quartet of local foes in this weekend's Battle of Baltimore, which features a pair of matches Friday and Saturday at Navy and Towson, respectively.
The Terrapins, who are 2-1 after a week of play, will take on the Towson Tigers and Navy Midshipmen at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday at Navy and then head to Towson Saturday to take on Morgan State and Loyola (Md.) at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Maryland has historically dominated this weekend's competition, owning a combined record of 36-2 against the four teams. Towson owns the only two wins, as the Terps are unbeaten all-time against Navy, Loyola and Morgan State.
The Terps began the season at home last weekend, defeating Stony Brook and Youngstown State before falling to Villanova in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Maryland Invitational.
Through the first week of action, Maryland's freshman and sophomore classes have paid big dividends. Sophomore outside hitter Maddi Lee leads the Terps with 48 kills and ranks fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in that category. Freshman outside hitter Kara Bates isn't far behind, recording 43 kills thus far. Freshman setter Taylor Jones is averaging 40 assists per match, the fourth-best total in the league, and freshman libero Sam Rosario ranks in the conference's top 10 in digs at 3.15 per set.
Senior middle blocker Katie Usher enters the weekend only six blocks shy of fourth place on the school's all-time list. Usher is 31 block assists shy of fourth place in that category, as well.
During Friday's tournament play at Navy, portions of the competition will feature simultaneous action on two courts.
Towson is 2-2 coming into the weekend while Navy is 1-2, Loyola is 0-4 and Morgan State is 2-3.
