COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team travels to Tobacco Road this weekend for road matches at North Carolina and NC State at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, respectively.
The Terrapins are 9-7 and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference through the first week of conference play. Maryland's conference victory came last Tuesday at Boston College in four sets. The Terps are looking to build on that road win this week, as they have not won more than two road conference matches in a season since 2005.
Senior middle blocker Katie Usher is having a big season for Maryland, leading the Terps with a .360 hitting percentage on 158 kills. Usher ranks fourth in the ACC in hitting percentage and now ranks 10th in school history with a .289 career percentage.
Sophomore Lisa Scott has complemented Usher in the middle well, averaging 1.15 blocks per set, the fourth-best average in the league. Freshman libero Sam Rosario is one of the top defensive players in the ACC already. Rosario is running away with the conference lead in service aces with 35, 13 more than anyone else in the ACC. Rosario also ranks fifth in the ACC with 246 digs.
North Carolina, the defending ACC co-champion, is off to a slow start in 2009. The Tar Heels are currently 5-8 and 1-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels own a 33-22 edge all-time against the Terps and Maryland has not won in Chapel Hill, N.C., since 1997.
NC State is 7-10 and 0-2 in the ACC. The Terps have dominated the all-time series against the Wolfpack, 37-18. Maryland has won 13 of the last 14 meetings, as NC State won in Raleigh, N.C., last season to snap a 12-match losing streak at the hands of Maryland.
