Box Score

TOWSON, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team competed in the second day of the Battle of Baltimore Saturday at Towson University, splitting a pair of matches by sweeping Morgan State before losing in four to Loyola (Md.) in the second match of the day.

The Terrapins (4-3) cruised against the Bears of Morgan State in their first match, winning 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17. Freshman outside hitter Kara Bates led Maryland with 10 kills against the Bears while middle blockers Katie Usher and Lisa Scott added eight kills apiece, as the Terps hit .386 as a team.

After a short break, Maryland returned to the court to face Loyola. The Greyhounds made life difficult for the Terps, holding them to .116 hitting en route to a four-set victory by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-22.

Maryland led by as many as three points in every set, but couldn't put the Greyhounds away. The Terps led big in the fourth set, 13-5, and appeared poised to send the match to a fifth and deciding set. But Loyola went on a 12-3 run to regain the lead and go on to win the match.

Usher paced the Terps with a season-high 15 kills on .385 hitting in a losing effort. Nina Camaioni led the Greyhounds with 17 kills.

Scott was named to the all-tournament team, recording 35 kills and 14 blocks over four matches.

The Terps remain in the area next weekend, when they will play in the Georgetown Classic in Washington, D.C.
