COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Lisa Scott led the Maryland volleyball team with seven kills on a .333 attack percentage and Brittney Grove added seven kills and five block assists but the Terps couldn't overcome early mistakes Sunday afternoon as they lost to Virginia, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18).
The Terps (13-6, 4-3 ACC) snapped their undefeated record at home with a loss to the Cavaliers (9-8, 304 ACC) despite a strong performance by sophomore Kara Bates, who started in relief of injured senior Michelle Kenning. Bates tied Grove and Scott for a team-high with seven kills and finished with the second-highest attack percentage on the day (.300).
"It's disappointing, we didn't execute today," said head coach Tim Horsmon. "We didn't make the plays that we needed to make. [The loss] is a reality check. It puts us back in a position where we understand that we have to work and compete every single day. We can be a very good team, but we're not good enough not to come out and play hard."
Having won three straight within the ACC, the Cavaliers made plays when necessary. Simone Asque led Virginia with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs, followed by McKenzie Adams who recorded 14 kills on a .379 attack percentage.
"I think today Virginia came out and was really aggressive and really ready to win," said senior captain Grove. "I think we just weren't aggressive enough. We need to get back to practice and get ready for another big week coming up."
Maryland will host Miami (13-5, 3-3 ACC) Friday night on the main floor at the Comcast Center as the first event of Maryland Madness. In 2009, the Terps lost both games against the Hurricanes and Maryland holds a 7-6 lead in the all-time series.
Following the volleyball match, the men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced with brief scrimmages taking place for the first time this season. Doors will open at 4:30 and fans are encouraged to bring canned food and other non-perishable items as a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. Drop locations will be situated inside the Comcast Center entrances, staffed by the Maryland Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
