COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
Senior defender Colleen Deegan received three major honors following her efforts in the Terps' wins last week at No. 2 Boston College and at NC State.
The native of Centreville, Va., became the first Terp in history to be named the NSCAA National Player of the Week, was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Player of the Week and was the second Terp this season to earn ACC Player of the Week honors.
Deegan was a central figure for the Terps both offensively and defensively in the back-to-back conference road wins. At No. 2/4 Boston College, Deegan scored the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left in the match. The 5-foot-10 center back carved out enough space in the box to get on the end of a corner kick to head home the game-winning goal. She also helped the Terps' defense hold the high-powered Eagles, who came into the game averaging nearly three goals per game, to just one goal.
She followed that up with a stellar defensive effort in the 1-0 shutout win at NC State, which had been averaging 2.0 goals per game. She also helped set up the game's lone goal with a great pass against the grain to sophomore Megan Gibbons, who then crossed the ball into the box where junior Jasmyne Spencer finished the play with a one-timer.
Maryland is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation by Soccer America with an 11-1-1 overall record. The Terps' 3-1-1 start in their first five ACC games is its best beginning to conference play since 1999 when they also started 3-1-1.
