Game Notes
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland field hockey team, ranked No. 1 in the latest Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, will take on No. 19 Michigan (7-4, 2-0 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET in Ann Arbor. Sunday's game will not be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com, but Gametracker live stats will be available.
Maryland owns the all-time series over Michigan 9-1 and hasn't lost to the Wolverines since 2001. The two teams met in the 1999 NCAA title game in Boston, as the Terps won 2-1 for their third NCAA championship.
Head coach Missy Meharg earned career win 399 Friday evening, as the Terps (9-1, 3-0 ACC) topped No. 3 Virginia (9-1, 1-1 ACC) 2-1 in overtime in Charlottesville. Her career record of 399-102-9 gives her a clip of .791, the second-highest among all active NCAA Division I coaches.
In Friday's game at Virginia, the Cavaliers took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Junior Jemma Buckley put the Terrapins on the board in the 25th minute on a corner setup from sophomore Harriet Tibble and senior Katie O'Donnell.
O'Donnell scored on a backdoor pass from Buckley in the fourth minute of overtime for the winning goal. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Melissa Vassalotti had a career-high eight saves in the defensive battle.
Sunday's game closes a four-game, two week road trip for the Terrapins. They will return home this week for a 1 p.m. game vs. No. 13 Duke Saturday and a noon game vs. Pacific Sunday.
