ATLANTA, Ga. -
After upsetting then-No. 22 Florida State Sunday, the Maryland Terrapins volleyball team topped the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 3-0 on the road Saturday night. Maryland's win at the Georgia Tech was its first at the O'Keefe Coliseum since winning in five sets on Oct. 17, 1997.
Led by junior Lisa Scott, who recorded a team-high eight kills on a match-high .636 attack percentage, the Terrapins (15-8, 6-5 ACC) swept the Yellow Jackets (14-8, 7-4 ACC), 3-0, by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-21.
Senior Brittney Grove, sophomore Kara Bates and freshman Mary Cushman each pitched in seven kills for Maryland, which tied its ACC win total from last season when the Terps finished 6-14.
Maryland trailed 9-4 in the first set, following a service ace by Monique Mead, who recorded a match-high 13 kills. However, the Terps fought back to win eight of the next 11 points to tie the set at 12 each. The two conference foes played closely throughout the remainder of the first period with four tied scores and three lead changes, finally resulting in a 25-21 Maryland win.
Bailey Hunter recorded nine kills and Jennifer Percy notched in seven kills for the Georgia Tech offense, but the Yellow jackets couldn't overcome team errors, as they snapped their seven-game winning streak. Alexis Woodson recorded six total blocks to lead the Tech defense.
After splitting a pair of ACC road games, the Terps return home, where they are 9-2, starting on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. against North Carolina State.
