COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Kara Bates continued her hot streak with a team-high 14 kills on a game-high .429 attack percentage but the University of Maryland volleyball team lost at home to North Carolina, 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 21-25, 22-25) Sunday afternoon.

Maryland (16-9, 7-6 ACC) fought off the Atlantic Coast Conference's standings leader North Carolina (20-6, 11-2 ACC) in the first set to take a one-game lead, but the Tarheels used a balanced offensive attack to ultimately take the remaining three sets and the win.

Junior Lisa Scott recorded seven kills on .500 hitting and tallied three block assists for the Terps, who challenged North Carolina from beginning to end. Freshman Mary Cushman continued her strong freshman campaign with 13 kills and sophomore Remy McBain had a solid outing with a match-high 43 assists, eight kills and seven digs.

For North Carolina, Courtney Johnston, Emily McGee and Suzanne Haydel all brought in double-digit numbers in kills with 16, 14 and 10, respectively. Cora Harms had 41 assists and Kaylie Gibson led all players with a match-high 30 digs.

With the loss, Maryland drops to 7-6 within the ACC, but remain in the top-half of the standings thanks to recent victories over Florida State, Georgia Tech and NC State.

The Tarheels now stand alone in first place in the conference at 11-2. North Carolina leapfrogged Duke and now lead the Blue Devils by a half game.

The Terps will resume play on the road on Nov. 5 and 6 at Virginia Tech and Virgina before holding their final home series starting Nov. 12 against Wake Forest.

Maryland will hold its annual Senior Day on Nov. 14 against Duke at 1 p.m.
