GREENSBORO, N.C. - The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team (17-1, 5-0 ACC) took the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament the league announced Sunday. The 2010 ACC Tournament will be played at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University.
Maryland enters the tournament as the top seed for the eighth time in school history. The Terps went undefeated in ACC play for the second consecutive year to win the league's regular-season title.
As the tournament's top team, the Terrapins earned a bye in the first round, which will be played Thursday. Maryland will play the winner of the Thursday afternoon game between No. 4-seed Boston College and No. 5-seed Wake Forest. The Terps beat Boston College 4-2 and Wake Forest 5-3 earlier this year. Maryland's first game in the tournament will be Friday at 4 p.m.
North Carolina earned the second seed, with Virginia coming in as the No. 3-seed. The Cavaliers will play the sixth-seeded Duke Thursday. The Tar Heels will play the winner of that game Friday evening.
Maryland has won eight ACC titles, including the last two. In 2009, the Terrapins faced Virginia in the championship game. The Terps trailed 2-0 at the half, but quick scores from Katie O'Donnell and Nicole Muracco tied the game. Megan Frazer scored the game-winner in overtime off of a penalty corner.
Sunday's championship game will be broadcast live on the ACC's regional network, RSN, which includes FSN South, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, and New England Sports Network.
