COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Mary Cushman led the Maryland volleyball team with 10 kills on a .455 attack percentage and added three blocks Friday night as the Terps defeated Virginia Tech, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23).
The Terps (13-5, 4-2 ACC) won all three sets in dramatic fashion against Virginia Tech (10-6, 1-5 ACC). Neither team led by more than four points over the entire game.
Up two games and leading the third, 23-20, Maryland and head coach Tim Horsmon watched as the Hokies came back to tie the game, 23-23, before Lisa Scott's seventh kill of the night and a forced attack error gave the Terps their eighth win at the Comcast Pavilion and fourth win in the ACC.
Kara Bates tied her season-high with nine kills and Maddi Lee and Scott notched seven kills each. Scott's .462 attack percentage led all players.
Cara Baarandse had a match-high 11 kills for the Hokies, hitting .429. Samantha Gostling recorded nine kills for Tech.
With the win, the Terps take sole possession of fourth place in the ACC and are only two games behind Duke (14-2, 6-0 ACC) for first. The loss puts the Hokies 11th place, ahead of just Boston College (8-11, 0-6 ACC).
Maryland will look to add to its undefeated record at home in the Comcast Pavilion when it plays host the Virginia Cavaliers Sunday. The Terps hold a 32-19 lead in the all-time series with Virginia. The Cavaliers (8-8, 2-4 ACC) topped Boston College, 3-1 Friday.
With a win on Sunday, the Terps would tie their season wins mark from last season. In 2009, Maryland finished 14-19 overall, yet the Terps have a chance to top last year's total through only 19 games. Maryland's 13-5 start is the best under third-year head coach Tim Horsmon.
