COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Members of the Maryland field hockey team will participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference's new outreach initiative that connects student-athletes with local children in communities around conference championships.
Freshmen Brooke Cabrera and Shelby Sydnor will represent the Terps this week during the ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C.
As part of the new project, school representatives from ACC member schools will visit an elementary school during the Tournament. The school representatives, which include coaches, student-athletes and athletic trainers, will talk to kids about important topics such as nutrition and sportsmanship and will read books to the children that correlate.
A kid-friendly handout that introduces the Atlantic Coast Conference, its member institutions and one of the ACC Championships will be distributed to the classroom visited. Each handout also serves as a free entry for one child to a single game of the respective Championship.
Following the school visit, a representative from the elementary school or district will be presented at halftime of the Championship game of the respective tournament with several copies of the book, which was read to the students earlier in the week.
The top-seeded Terrapins will take the field Friday at 4 p.m. at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest. They will face the winner of the game between the No. 4 seed Boston College and No. 5 seed Wake Forest. Friday's game will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com and fans can watch live on the ACC Network at TheACC.com.
