COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head coach Brian Pensky was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Coach of the Year as selected by a vote of the league's 11 coaches.
"I am humbled by this honor," said Pensky, who is in his sixth season at the helm of the Terrapin program. "The ACC is the top soccer conference in the country, and we have a collection of the best coaches in the country. So to have this group of individuals bestow this honor on me, is nothing but humbling. I am fortunate to have several of the top assistant coaches in the country by my side, day in and day out. Jon, Laurie and Kristen are certainly are a huge part of this program's continual growth. Lastly, and very importantly, our entire staff feels lucky to have a group of such talented, committed student-athletes. They are the ones who are most-deserving of recognition - they have put in a tremendous amount of work to get this program back on its feet."
Pensky becomes just the third head coach in the history of Maryland women's soccer to earn the award after leading the Terps to arguably the finest season in program history. The Terps boast a 15-2-1 overall record for a .861 winning percentage, which is the highest in school history. Pensky also led his team to a 7-2-1 conference mark with the seven ACC wins nearly doubling the previous school record of four, which was reached in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2009. Pensky's Terps have also reached No. 3 in the Soccer America Top 25, marking the highest all-time ranking for the program in any major poll.
Pensky's players have also enjoyed an unprecedented level of success this season. Maryland had three different players earn ACC Player of the Week honors for the first time since 1995. Senior center back Colleen Deegan became the first Terp in program history to be named the NSCAA National Player of the Week, following her game-winning goal at then-No. 2 Boston College on Oct. 7. It didn't take long for the Terps to have their second NSCAA National Player of the Week as junior forward Sade Ayinde earned the honor after she scored both goals in Maryland's historic 2-1 first-ever win at then-No. 2 North Carolina on Oct. 24.
The All-ACC teams were also announced at the annual awards banquet with junior forward Jasmyne Spencer earning first team honors for the second consecutive year.
"Jasmyne is special," said Pensky. "She is clearly deserving of such recognition. As I've said over and over again as Jasmyne collects various honors - it is her work, her determination and her want to win that truly separates Jasmyne. We are certainly lucky to have her on our side. She's the type of player defenders despise having to play against, because of her speed and relentless work rate - teams can never relax, and there's such value in that for us. Like I said, she's a good one to have on our side."
Spencer has had another spectacular season and leads the Terps with 23 points on nine goals and five assists, which are the exact same numbers she has last season while earning first team All-ACC honors. She is the first Terp to be named to the All-ACC first team in back-to-back seasons since goalkeeper Nikki Resnick was selected in 2005 and 2006. The last field player to earn consecutive first team honors was Erin Taylor in 1995 and 1996. She currently ranks among the Top 25 in career points (10th, 48), goals (9th, 19), assists (23rd, 10), shots (9th, 144) and game-winning goals (4th, 8).
The Terrapins (15-2-1, 7-2-1 ACC) are the No. 2 seed in this week's ACC Tournament and will open the postseason against No. 7 seed Duke in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. start at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
