CORAL GABLES, Fla. -
Kara Bates recorded eight kills and Mary Cushman pitched in seven, but the University of Maryland volleyball team fell on the road to Miami 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Hurricanes (22-8, 12-7 ACC) swept the Terps (19-12, 10-9 ACC) 9-25, 19-25 and 18-25.
After losing the first set by a double-digit margin, Maryland fought back in the second and led with an early 5-3 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Bates. Miami would regain and eventually stretch the lead to a 16-9 advantage, but the Terps went on an 8-1 run to reduce the `Canes lead to just two, at 17-15. Ultimately, Miami countered with a run of its own to take the second set, 25-19.
In the third, Maryland capitalized on consecutive attack errors by Lane Carico and a kill by Bates to open at 3-0 and later led 8-7, but Miami's potent offense was too much for the Terps Sunday as they won the game, 25-18, completing the match and season sweep.
Despite the loss, several Terps moved up the school record books today. Leading Maryland with 24 digs, sophomore Remy McBain is in sole possession of ninth-place all-time at Maryland with an even 1,400 career digs. Notching four total blocks against both Miami on Sunday and Florida State on Friday, junior Lisa Scott passed Jade Brown for eight-most in school history. Senior Bethany Springer's 499 digs on the season also qualify for fifth-most in a single year at Maryland.
For the `Canes, Carico recorded a match-high 18 kills and 47 total attacks. Katie Gallagher dished out a match-best 32 assists and Ariell Cooke brought in nine kills on .400 hitting.
The Terps close the regular season Wednesday at Boston College (8-23, 0-18 ACC).
