COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team inked two players - Rebecca Gerrity of Marin, Calif., and Hailey Smith of Atherton, Calif., - to national letters of intent during the November signing period. The pair will join the Terps for the 2011-12 season.
"We are excited to add both Rebecca and Hailey to the Terp water polo family," head coach Carl Salyer said. "They are great kids, students and athletes. I expect both girls to have an immediate impact on the team next year. Their work ethic will add to the high performance of our squad. The focus of these student-athletes is just what the Terps are looking for to continue progressing towards championships."
Gerrity received this year's Marin County Athletic League Women's Water Polo Player of the Year. She was also first team all-league honors for the past three years with NCS recognition.
"Rebecca is the kind of player that will work hard and create opportunities at both ends of the pool from her energy, experience and skill," Salyer said. "She has the desire and ability to make good things happen when the game is on the line."
Gerrity was a member of the Marin Club Water Polo team for eight years. She received the USA Water Polo Academic All America award for the past three years, while maintaining a 4.5 GPA.
Smith has a number of accolades as well. She received Menlo Junior Athlete of the Year in 2009-10 season, as well as first team all-league, first team All-CCS, and first team All-Palo Alto Daily. She was also named PAL League MVP.
"Hailey is a smart, tough player that will add a scoring punch to the offense from the outside," Salyer said "She has a great ability to put the ball away under pressure."
Smith has been a member of water polo clubs including, Stanford Club (2008-present) and Pacific Zone (2008).
