CHESTNUT HILLS, Mass. -
Sophomore Kara Bates and freshman Mary Cushman each knocked in 12 kills but the University of Maryland volleyball team lost its 2010 season finale, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25) Wednesday afternoon at Boston College.
Junior Lisa Scott had an efficient game, with nine kills on just 16 total attacks, amounting to a team-high .375 attack percentage for the Terps (19-13, 10-10 ACC), who started off slow and failed to close out the Eagles (9-24, 1-19 ACC) in their last game of the season.
After losing the first set, 18-25, the Terps rallied offensively for one of their best sets of the season. In the second, Maryland hit a team-best .382 attack percentage, led by junior Lisa Scott's six kills on seven attacks (.714).
Tied at one set apiece heading into the third, Boston College started strong and never trailed. Though Maryland fought to bring the deficit to just two, at 14-12 and then 15-12, the Eagles pulled away and closed the game on a 10-7 run.
The fourth and final game began tight as the Terps and Eagles found themselves tied at 13-13 mid-set. The teams traded points and Maryland eventually took a 19-18 lead, but the Terps couldn't close the set as several Terrapin attack and service errors helped clinch Boston College's first conference win of the season.
In the final game for Maryland's seniors, Bethany Springer and Brittney Grove were No.1 and 2 in digs for the Terps with 17 and 9, respectively.
Sophomore Remy McaBain recorded a team-best 41 assists.
For Boston College, Tsvetelina Dureva's 19 kills, Melanie Cimino's .571 attack percentage, Dani Moskitis' 54 assists, Brennan Clark's 22 digs and Melissa McTighe's five total blocks were all match highs.
