CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Sophomore Kara Bates continued her streak of double-digit kills, leading the Terrapins with 13 on .385 hitting to go along with five digs and three blocks as the University of Maryland volleyball team handled Virginia in three sets Friday evening, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17.
Avenging a home loss to the Cavs earlier this season, Maryland (17-9, 8-6 ACC) dropped Virginia (12-12, 6-8 ACC) in a dominating performance which featured a .363 team attack percentage and 14 total blocks.
The Terrapins faced the toughest competition in the opening set, when the Cavaliers took an early 9-5 lead. However, Maryland fought back thanks to back-back kills by freshman Mary Cushman and two each from Bates and junior Lisa Scott. Following a kill by Virginia's Jessica O'Shoney to reduce the lead to 20-17, Maryland went on an 8-0 run to close out the first set.
After finishing last weekend's game against NC State with a .700 attack percentage, junior Lisa Scott led the team again in hitting with a .500 average and nine kills. Senior Brittney Grove knocked in 10 kills on .429 hitting to accompany her four total blocks.
Senior Bethany Springer, who already ranks seventh in school history in career digs, led Maryland with 17.
O'Shoney led the Cavs with nine kills on .353 hitting and A.J. Cushman recorded a team-high 20 digs.
Maryland will continue its road swing at Blacksburg, Va. Saturday against the Hokies of Virginia Tech, whom swept Boston College, 3-0 Friday night.
