The top-seeded Maryland (18-1, 5-0) field hockey team will face off against second-seeded North Carolina (19-1, 4-1) at noon Sunday in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game at Wake Forest. Sunday will mark the 13th meeting between the Terrapins and the Tar Heels in the ACC title game.
The Terps have won the last two ACC Championships and eight total under ACC Coach of the Year Missy Meharg. After Sunday's game, Maryland will have played in 19 ACC Championship games under Meharg.
The Terrapins beat fifth-seeded Wake Forest 5-4 Friday afternoon in double overtime. Four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year Katie O'Donnell and ACC Freshman of the Year Jill Witmer each scored twice in regulation time. Three minutes into the second overtime period, junior All-ACC team member Jemma Buckley scored the game-winner off of a penalty corner play.
The Terrapins beat then-No. 1 North Carolina 3-2 in College Park on Oct. 23. O'Donnell scored twice in the first half to give Maryland a 2-0 lead at the break. North Carolina's Taryn Gjurich and Marta Malmberg each scored in the second half to tie the game. Buckley scored off of a corner with 2:27 remaining for the win.
Meharg was named ACC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her 23-year career and second straight year. Sophomores Megan Frazer and Harriet Tibble were named to the All-ACC team, along with Buckley.
Sunday's championship game will be broadcast live at noon on the ACC's regional network, RSN, which includes FSN South, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, and New England Sports Network. It will also be broadcast live online at WMUCSports.com and Gametracker live stats will be available.
